NewAir Portable Ice Maker Is Perfect For Indoor And Outdoor Occasions

Last Updated on April 17, 2019 by Cassie Lyons

This portable ice maker from NewAir is a kitchen appliance I wouldn’t have thought to buy – unless, of course, I didn’t have a fridge that made ice for me. When I did the research for this review, I almost decided to buy it anyway for those hot summer days when we have company over and the fridge can’t keep up with demand for ice for the glasses of lemonade. The icemaker is a cute red color, and it looks sleek and modern – kind of like an updated bread machine. It’s something I wouldn’t mind leaving out on my counter for display. Plus, you can take it with you anywhere you can plug it in, which means you don’t have to buy ice for the family reunion anymore.

Most reviewers who bought this portable ice maker to fill a need seemed to really love it. It works quickly – popping out a load of ice in six to eight minutes, depending on who you ask. Like any other small kitchen appliance, it’s got a few pros and cons, though.

The Positives
Many reviewers were impressed by how well the NewAir ice maker worked – and how quickly. Like I said, it can pop out a load of ice in six to eight minutes, according to most reviews. Reviewers also liked that you could choose the size of ice cubes you wanted the machine to make, so it was easy to get whatever you needed. One thing to note is that this ice machine is surprisingly quiet until you hear the ice popping down into the container. I wouldn’t have expected this from a small kitchen appliance like this one.

The Negatives
Several people noted that the ice came out with a faint plastic odor and taste at first. A quick fix for this is to run a few cycles with a solution of lemon juice or vinegar and water. Also, the machine isn’t meant to keep ice cold. If you leave it in too long, it will just melt and be taken back in to make more ice cubes. You need to store ice cubes in your actual freeze if you want them to stick around for a while. A few reviewers noted that the machine broke down quickly, but this wasn’t a common problem. Also, it seems to be an issue with even more expensive ice machines, like the Sunpentown IM-101S and the Whynter T-2MA SNO.

So What’s The Scoop?
If you’re in the market for an ice maker for the next family reunion, this is a great option, and it’s affordable as far as portable ice makers go. Versions from other companies have some cool extra features, but you’ll also pay a lot more for these bells and whistles, too.
