Nelson Has Built An Inventive Traveling Sprinkler Named The Raintrain

Last Updated on June 9, 2018 by Cassie Lyons

There is nothing finer than playing with pets and children on a lush green grass, but maintaining a healthy yard can be time consuming and environmentally unfriendly. Everyone would love to have an in-ground sprinkler system to keep their plants, bushes, and yard healthy during the warm summer months, but not everyone can afford the sometimes staggering price tag that comes with such a system. For the rest of us there is the Raintrain Traveling Sprinkler system. The Raintrain is designed to follow a set path and shut off automatically, taking the hassle out of watering the lawn.

The Raintrain traveling sprinkler is the time saving, efficient solution that allows anyone to have a green lawn. No tools are required to install the system, all you need is a hose and you are ready to water. The traveling sprinkler has a hose attachment on the rear with a guide wheel in the front and two traction wheels in the back. Users need only set out the hose along a predetermined path, avoiding sharp turns, put the automatic stopping ramp in place, and turn the water on.

The Traveling Sprinkler will follow the path of the hose and automatically end the flow of water when it goes over the stop ramp. The Raintrain walking sprinkler has two arms that can be adjusted to varying angles to disperse water anywhere between 15 and 56 feet. A small number of users have found the hose connection difficult to work with and the adjustable arms hard to perfect the water’s spray.

The Positives
Traveling wheeled lawn sprinkler which travels along length of attached hose. Adjustable rotary spray arms with 2 speeds and auto shut-off ramp to stop it. Rustproof c-iron construction, chip-resistant and powder-coat paint. Includes 1 sprinkler and shut-off ramp but doesn’t include a hose. This traveling lawn sprinkler weighs 18.1-pounds and has a 2-year warranty.

The Negatives
Some reviewers said the hose connection was difficult to work with. Comments about difficulty perfecting the water spray using the adjustable arms.

So What’s The Scoop?
The majority of users find the Raintrain the perfect solution for those without automatic sprinkler systems. Most customers love the set it and forget it design with a reliable shut off function.

I would be interested in rebuilding a custom unit that will spray DOWN instead of up. It’s a experimental concept that would require mixing part and pieces from different sprinklers. I want the movement of the tractor but the DOWNWARD spray of an oscillating fan sprayer (fan shaped spray). Sort of like a driveway cleaner-sprayer that slightly oscillates and moves at a medium speed. (output designed for a balance of Max volume at max pressure) Rather than just ONE sprayer this NEW PRODUCT would have TWO or THREE sprayers on the tractor; all spraying DOWN in a fanning motion. I would imagine, rather than a sprayer spinning on top of the tractor, I would need TWO SPRAYERS; front and rear, oscillating between 10 & 35 degrees. To maximize volume and pressure; output may need to alternate between front and rear. The front sprayer is made of flat nozzles, the back is made of round nozzles. The width or area that these sprayers would cover is quite narrow compared to current models, I would estimate coverage of a 3 to 5 foot path. (to maximize volume and pressure into a smaller area)

Rather than running along the supply hose for direction, I’d like to design a zig-zag path that tows the hose out behind the area covered. ??? How to Steer a tractor without it riding on the hose??? Maybe a tractor that has hydraulic steering to zig-zag or run in increasing circles? Maybe a water sensor to run a decreasing pattern?

WHY??? The short answer is …
a potential NEW PRODUCT with DIFFERENT BENEFITS than watering the grass … that would open NEW SALES for a different market segment.

Your only cost would be shipping of miscellaneous parts and pieces for me to tinker with. Please call me with your questions

    Thanks,
